What is lock-in period?

A period during which you are not allowed to withdraw your money.

Explained in more detail

It is a hard rule, not a fee. You cannot pay your way out of it. Different products have very different lock-ins, and a longer one is not automatically worse if the money was meant to stay invested anyway.

An example

For instanceELSS locks money for 3 years, a tax saving fixed deposit for 5, and PPF for 15.
